Jumpstart’s Read for the Record

24 September 2012, 13:34

If there is one very clear memory of my childhood, it’s that I always had my head in a book.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve immersed myself in an imaginative story, embracing my ability to materialize characters and scenery in my mind. As a kid, I found no greater joy than what a book could offer me (much to my sister’s dismay, when we were on a tropical vacation and all I wanted to do was read). Whether it was Fun with Dick and Jane, the Babysitter’s Club series, Sweet Valley High, or even the Sunday comics, as a kid, I LOVED TO READ.

Of course, that love for reading has carried over into my adult years. Even having three small children, I read every night in bed before I fall asleep. I might not get through 4 pages before my brain shuts down (unless it’s 50 Shades of Grey–which does count as reading), but I look forward to those 4 pages each night. There is magic in reading and if there is one goal I have as a mom, it’s to encourage my children to find their own magic in books. And to KEEP READING.

Today is the official kick-off of Jumpstart’s Read for the Record campaign. Grammy award-winning artist Ashanti will be the Celebrity Ambassador for the 2012 Read for the Record campaign, and kicked off the campaign with an appearance on the TODAY show this morning, to encourage people to participate in the world’s largest shared reading experience on October 4, 2012.

Jumpstart’s Read for the Record is one day of the year when millions of individuals come together to celebrate literacy by breaking the world record for reading the same book on the same day. On October 4, adults and children across the country will read Ladybug Girl and the Bug Squad, by David Soman and Jacky Davis, in support of Jumpstart’s mission: to work toward the day every child in America enters school prepared to succeed.

I’ll admit that it was hard for me at first, to read every night to my girls. Having children so close to one another made life a little chaotic (read: insane) and I couldn’t get them to sit still through a story at first. But I kept reading when I could and now my two older daughters love books. They are captivated by everything and have lots of questions as I read to them. The fun has truly kicked in and now we all enjoy choosing which stories to read each night. And I now have buddies for trips to one of my favorite places on Earth–the bookstore. And not just for the coffee (although that counts).

I know that I will be reading Ladybug Girl and the Bug Squad to my girls on October 4th and here’s your chance to, too!

I’m giving away a copy of the book to a lucky reader! Enter to win at the Rafflecopter below!
