Cumberland Farms offers SmartPay Check-Link + GIVEAWAY

7 March 2013, 12:48

When I first started driving, gas was 97 cents a gallon. (I’m gonna let you do the homework on how many years it’s been.) I drove an 88′ Nissan Maxima (and by drove, I mean borrowed from my parents) and that baby could fill up for the cost of less than what I pay now for weekly lattes. Even more clear of a memory was that I could throw $5 of hard-earned waitressing money into the gas tank and drive into the next week.

As they say, Times: They are a’ changin’.

The average price of gas today is $3.76 per gallon. And instead of a Nissan Maxima, I drive a small government-issued tank. Also known as an Enclave. (I absolutely love my Enclave, just so it’s clear. I am just not sure if I’m sometimes filling an SUV or my entire neighborhood’s gas tanks.)

As someone who is always looking for ways to save on gas, I was super excited to learn about Cumberland Farms’ recently launched SmartPay Check-Link payment program, which saves you 10 cents on every gallon of gas you buy.

Here’s how the new secure SmartPay program works:
- You can download the SmartPay app for FREE to your iPhone or Android – or, if you still rock a flip-phone (I know you exist), you can pick up a physical SmartPay card at participating Cumberland Farms/Gulf locations.
- It’s FREE to enroll, and you can link the mobile app right to your checking account (and assign a pin number).
- To fill up your tank, simply enter your pump number into the mobile app, which will automatically turn on the pump and withdraw the appropriate amount from your checking account (using the pin number you’ve assigned). No cash, coins, or credit cards needed.
- You’ll save 10 cents on every gallon of gas every time you use SmartPay, and the app even includes a rolling-dial display showing your lifetime savings.

There’s even an added bonus feature of SmartPay. Parents with teenagers on the road can actually activate a gas pump from their living room with their phone, which is a cool way to fund a gas fill-up and fund only that – as opposed to just dishing out cash.

There are no catches or gimmicks to SmartPay. It’s simply an innovative program that merges digital technology with savings. These are two words that are right up my alley. Along with the words, “popcorn,” “vacation,” and “Who wants to clean my house?”

Do they make an app for those, too?

I’ve already enrolled in SmartPay and I can’t wait to start using it. Although 10 cents might not seem like an earth-shattering amount, SmartPay just bought me a few extra coffees for the month. AND, I get to use my iPhone in yet another fun way. Who doesn’t want to look like a digital rockstar when they pull out their phone and activate the pump with it?

I just also need to take a moment to give a big high-five to Rhode Island-based Cumberland Farms as the founder of this program. As a native Rhode Islander and someone who has walked to Cumberland Farms after school for many of moons, I appreciate the family-owned and operated company (that is now located across 11 states!) and all they’ve done for community support over the years. Plus, they have 99 cent coffee ALL THE TIME.

This is a company that clearly gives back.

I have some more good news. One lucky reader will receive a $25 Cumberland Farms gift card!

  2. Courtney Buteau March 7, 2013

I love that you can save 10 cents on every gallon when you use it! P.S. Gas was .89 cents a gallon I remember when I got my license and I had a 91 Nissan Maxima! lol

  3. Jackie March 7, 2013

I love that you can save SO much! What a clever, convenient tool for moms on the go. Thank you for sharing. By the way, I have been a Cumberland Farms fan since I was a tween and the gas prices were even less than when you drove your '88 Nissan Maxima! I drove a powder blue 1980 Mustang AKA, Blue Ghost! ;)

Good incentive to save on gas - every bit helps now with such ridiculous gas prices!

Courtney - I can't remember exactly what I paid per gallon when I got my license but it was nowhere near $4! You're clearly younger than me - My first car was a hand me down red Honda accord - and I got my license in - gulp - 1985! :-) I should look up what gas was then!

  5. I got my license in 1989, it cost more for gum now. I (my husband) would love to save money on gas. My first car was a 78 Malibu Classic that died on my way to school so I left it in the middle of the road.

I also spent my hard earned... and it was indeed hard earned... waitressing tips on gas. Times are changing and becoming much more difficult!

  9. Carla @ All of Me Now March 7, 2013

Ok so insanely cool. And they founded the app? Excited to see how it grows.

  10. Sarah {Soxys Diamond} March 7, 2013

I love this app! We use it when we don't have any Stop and Shop gas points b/c I'm all about saving the 10 cents a gallon!

  11. Jodi March 7, 2013

One of the first things I asked my husband when
We met was how come everyone in RI drives a maxima? Love the idea of this app - thanks for sharing!

  12. Jaime March 10, 2013

I was wondering what that was all about! Awesome!

  13. Liz {Learning to Juggle} March 10, 2013

I LOVE that I don't have to pull out my card at the pump. When I do it usually just ends up in my pocket and then eventually in the wash...i NEVER do that to my phone!!

  14. Gayle Fedelia March 15, 2013

This seems like a no brainer to sign up for!
